
Indiana Field Hockey to Host No. 18 Cal & Stanford

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –––– After a successful weekend in Iowa City, Indiana Field Hockey is riding a three-game winning streak entering two home non-conference matches. The Hoosiers will start the weekend against No. 18 Cal on Friday, Oct. 18 and will face Stanford on Sunday, Oct. 20 with both matchups at Deborah Tobias Field.
WEEKEND REWIND:
-Indiana won out last weekend in their two games in Iowa City. They started with a double overtime win against No. 12 Iowa, 2-1, on Friday and finished the weekend with a 4-0 shutout against Monmouth.
-Against Iowa, the Hoosiers forced a defensive battle in the first half as they held Iowa to zero shots and zero penalty corners in that time.
-Meredith Lee scored her first goal of the season to give Indiana the first lead of the game early in the second half.
-Iowa would tie the game early in the fourth quarter forcing extra time.
-With only two minutes left in the second overtime period, Sofia Arrebola Garcia scored the game winner off a penalty corner.
-On Sunday, Indiana earned their third-straight win in a 4-0 shut out win against Monmouth.
-Freshman Mijntje Hagen shined as she scored two goals in the contest.
-Indiana started the game fast as Hagen and Jemima Cookson each scored a goal in the first three minutes of action.
-Yip Van Wonderen found the back of the cage to put Indiana up 3-0 at halftime.
-Hagen scored the final goal of the game with less than a minute into the second half.
PROGRAM CELEBRATION:
-Not only are Indiana's games with Cal and Stanford important as the season reaches the home stretch, but the Hoosiers will have Alumni Day on Friday and Senior Day on Sunday.
-Alumni Day will feature recognition of players and coaches from all eras of the program's history.
-Senior Day will honor the program's 11 seniors, including Brooke Ross, Kayla Kiwak, Sydney Keld, Meghan Dillon, Arabella Loveridge, Yip van Wonderen, Meredith Lee, Lara Mortz, Maggie Carter, Sofia Arrebola Garcia and Jemima Cookson.
QUICK STATS:
-Eight different Hoosiers have scored a goal this season: Inés Garcia Prado, Yip van Wonderen, Sydney Keld, Sofia Arrebola Garcia, Jemima Cookson, Mijntje Hagen, Meredith Lee and Maggie Carter.
-Garcia Prado leads the way with six goals while van Wonderen and Hagen follow with five goals each. Keld has three goals and Arrebola Garcia, Cookson, Lee and Carter each have one.
-As a team, 18 Hoosiers have taken a shot. Garcia Prado and van Wonderen lead all players with 27 and 26 shots, respectively, followed by Keld (21), Arrebola Garcia (17), Jemima Cookson (15), and Meghan Dillon (14).
-Ninety-four of the team's total 168 shots have been on goal (56%).
-Sofia Arrebola Garcia currently leads the team in assists with five. Lara Mortz follows with three assists while Ricci, Cookson and van Wonderen each have two assists. Garcia Prado, Hagen, Lee and Emma Thompson have one each as well.
-Sadie Canelli has taken over the starting job in the cage for the Hoosiers after making her first career start at Miami (Ohio). In that game, she recorded seven saves and has recorded 35 saves through her first nine appearances.
-The Hoosiers are earning more shot opportunities than the competition. Indiana is averaging 14 shots per game compared to their opposition's 9 shots per game.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION:
-Indiana will play its sixth ranked team of the season as Cal is currently ranked No. 18 in the NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll.
-Cal is 6-5 with wins against Michigan State, Kent State and twice against UC Davis. They have lost their last four matches against No. 12 Duke, No. 1 North Carolina, No. 10 Boston College, No. 14 Syracuse.
-Liz Klompmaker currently leads Cal with 11 goals scored. Holly pears and Maya Hoepfner follow in the scoring ranks with four and three goals each, respectively.
-Canisha van Duyn leads Cal with 10 assists, followed by Sydney Decher and Pauline Lingnau who have each recorded four.
-The two matches with the California schools will serve as the return visits after Indiana played games at both programs in September 2022. The Hoosiers won each of those matches and defeated UC Davis in a three-match trip to the west coast.
-Stanford is 5-7 with wins against Ohio, Ball State, Kent State, UC Davis, and Bellarmine. Their losses have come against Northeastern, No. 2 Louisville, No. 3 Virginia, No. 1 North Carolina, No. 12 Duke, No. 14 Syracuse, and No. 10 Boston College.
-Cara Sambeth leads Stanford in goals with five and is followed by Star Horlock and Allison Kuzyk who have three goals each.
-Jenny O'Grady is the team leader in assists with five on the season. She is followed by Liv Martin who has four, and Kate Nemec who has recorded two assists.
