Hoosiers Continue Conference Play on the Road

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. –––– No. 13 Indiana Field Hockey takes on another weekend on the road against conference opponents Michigan State and Ohio State. It will start in East Lansing, Michigan on Friday, Oct. 2 at 4 p.m. to face the Spartans at Ralph Young Field. The Hoosiers will close the weekend on Sunday Oct. 4 at noon against the Buckeyes at Buckeye Varsity Field in Columbus, Ohio.

SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
- Indiana's first match is at Michigan State on Friday at 4 p.m. The Spartans are currently 4-5 overall and 0-2 in the B1G. Most recently, they dropped their match (0-6) against Northwestern last Friday (Sept. 25.)
- Michigan State also faced off against Michigan on Sept. 18 in East Lansing, falling 1-2.
- The Hoosiers currently stand at 9-24 against Michigan State all time. They saw back-to-back wins in 2024 (1-0) and 2025 (6-1), both in Bloomington, Ind.
- Ohio State currently holds a 21-8 advantage against Indiana all-time. In the last meeting, IU defeated the Buckeyes 2-1 in 2025 in a home match. It looks to continue the win streak on Sunday.
- The Buckeyes are 4-5 on the season so far and 0-1 in conference play. Most recently, it fell 2-3 to No. 5 Iowa. Before the game on Sunday, Ohio State will face No.1 Northwestern on Friday afternoon.

- The 2026 campaign is only the third time in program history beating Iowa and Michigan in the same season. Previously, they secured victories against the teams in 2009 and 2024.
- The win over Iowa was our first top-2 ranked win in program history and the first win over a top-5 ranked team since Indiana beat No. 4 Duke in 2014.
- The three Hoosier losses have only been to ranked teams, all by one goal (No. 10 Miami (OH), No. 18 Louisville and No. 2 Iowa).
- Indiana has won six of the last seven games.
- If Indiana wins on Friday, the Hoosiers will be 7-3 overall which would be the best start through 10 games since 2014 (also a 7-3 start.)
WEEKEND RECAP
- The Hoosiers saw their second ranked victory on Saturday (Sept. 26) against No.13 ranked Michigan.
- Despite a slow start in the first half, with both teams adding pressure in their territories, Theresa Ricci came out strong after the break to put IU on the board early in the third. She made it a 1-0 match after taking advantage of a penalty corner.
- After finding power in the beginning of the third, the Hoosiers went on to have one more penalty corner and two more shots. However, Michigan responded with offensive momentum of its own, finding opportunities in Hoosier territory twice, both without success.
- With Ricci's goal going unanswered, IU secured the 1-0 victory.
- Sadie Canelli, who was named the Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Monday (Sept. 28) totaled four saves throughout the match, making critical plays to maintain the shutout.
- The win on Saturday was Indiana's sixth all time against the Wolverines, and the first since 2024.
DEFENSE DEEP-DIVE
- The Cream and Crimson have won six of its last seven contests, with the defense putting in a large effort in paving the way to victory.
- Out of the six wins, three have been shutouts. In the other three, Indiana has only allowed one goal for the opponent.
- Sadie Canelli has played a large role in the defensive effort, making four saves in the cage in the contest against Michigan. Previously, she saved a total of seven against Iowa, with five being in the non-conference match that ended with a shootout. She has totaled 26 saves for the season.
- On the field, the press added by IU has allowed just 42 total shots on goal combined for its opponents. IU has shot 103.
- Three Hoosiers have added defensive saves on the season. Inés Garcia Prado added to the effort against Cornell, where they topped the Big Red 2-1. First-year duo, Berta Sáenz de Santa María and Gabriela Garayo Aranceta, contributed a defensive save of their own in the second match against Iowa, helping maintain the no-score game that lasted until the fourth quarter.
OVERTIME TIDBITS
- Indiana's Inés Garcia Prado, Molly Stutte and Mijntje Hagen were named to the Big Ten's preseason Players to Watch list.
- Inés Garcia Prado, Mijntje Hagen and Gabriela Garayo Aranceta were featured on the 2026 NFHCA Division I Players to Watch List.
- Upperclassmen Mijntje Hagen, Javi Baeza, Inés Garcia Prado look to get the team to new heights this season as team captains.
- Indiana's roster bolsters a former high school duo who are once again playing together at the collegiate level. Javi Baeza and Charlotte Glasper played together at Shaker Heights High School (Ohio).
- The Hoosiers further their international talent, expanding the number of countries represented on the team. Lily Freeman and Jessie Mauro came to Bloomington from England while Keke Sluiter, Isa Smulders and Mijntje Hagen travelled from the Netherlands. Agustina Gamonal is from Chile and Helen Grahe represents Germany. Spain boasts the highest representation with Celia Arroyo Cabezudo, Inés Garcia Prado, Berta Sáenz de Santa María and Gabriela Garayo Aranceta representing Spain in Bloomington.
- First year Berta Sáenz de Santa María reunites on the field with second year Celia Arroyo Cabezudo as the pair both attended Esclavas Del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús. Alongside the duo, Gabriela Garayo Aranceta is also from Santander, Spain.
